Sansevieria is a genus of about 70 species of flowering plants native to Africa, Madagascar and South Asia. Within this genus species vary widely, ranging from desert succulents to thinner-leaved tropical plants. Sansevieria trifasciata, commonly referred to as the snake plant or mother-in-law’s tongue, has been found to remove toxins from the air via formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene through a process called crassulacean acid metabolism.

Sansevieria lives on neglect, having earned the nickname “immortal” plant.
